The caves are named after Bhima, a character from the Indian epic Mahabharata, as it is believed that he took shelter in these caves during one of his journeys. These were discovered in 1957 by archaeologist Dr. Vishnu Wakankar. Since then, there have been extensive studies and these have become a popular tourist attraction. In 2003, these were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most striking things about the Bhimbetka rock paintings is their sheer size. Some of the paintings are over 100 feet long and 50 feet high, making them some of the largest examples of rock art in the world. The paintings are also notable for their vibrant colors, which have been preserved surprisingly well over the millennia.
In addition to the rock paintings, Bhimbetka also has a number of other interesting features, including ancient rock shelters, which were used by the people who lived in the area. These shelters provide valuable insights into the way of life of the people who lived in the region. Its rock paintings offer a glimpse into the past and provide a valuable glimpse into the lives of the people who lived in the region thousands of years ago.
Overall, Bhimbetka is a fascinating and beautiful site that offers a glimpse into the distant past. Whether you are a historian or just someone who appreciates art and culture, a visit to Bhimbetka is sure to be a memorable experience.
